However, to quote a famous writer: “Grown ups will never understand how come this is so important”.

SCHOOLS AWARD amounting to 1,000 Euros to:

Stelle Strappate by Scuola Primaria G. Rodari - Torchiedo (VB) – 12’00”
With the following motivation:
The children have construed the historical events relating to the Shoah in a natural and earnest way. In particular, they tell the story of two little Jewish girls: a very good opportunity to understand in the first person both History and the drama of those who lived it without writing their names in history books.

Special Mention to:

I supercannoni - Scuola Elementare Bruno Ciari - San Maurizio Canavese (TO)
With the following motivation:
War made and lived by children. They describe the awful images of war with a great deal of accuracy; however, they still leave some hope for the chance of peace, much as original. Being the protagonists, children teach both adults and kids that all energies and efforts must be addressed towards the search for peace, which must be sincere and come from our hearts.

THE MALESCORTO 2005 PRIZES:

Fiction Award
SO – MYOL – EUI SI – GAN
Director: Je-hui Lee
Korea

Motivation
The movie deals with a difficult topic - death - with a style that is far from trite and banal. A new tessera of Eastern cinema that allows both traditions and deepest philosophy of its country to flow through the images of the film, whose construction is streamline, alternating strong realism and myth. Mankind’s attachment to life is clearly depicted, so much so that the leading character crosses the river of Death in order to go back to the Living.

Fiction - Special Mention
PULPVILLE
Director: Nina Martinek
Usa

Motivation
The accurate editing work of this film catches the eye; not to mention the emotionally impacting high tension of the script, modelled according to the most innovative narration techniques. All of which captures the viewer’s attention from beginning to end, notwithstanding the non-convincing, slightly affected ending.

Non Fiction Award
‘NA SCIURNATA LONGA
Director: Anna Bianco
Italy

Motivation
The movie allows loneliness, which is often forgotten, to speak. Its message is indeed delicate and its editing turns each methodical gesture of life into what has been and no longer will be.

Non Fiction Animation - Special Mention
LA GALINA CIEGA
Director: Isabel Herguera
Spain

Motivation
For the poetry expressed through the images of the film. Fiction intertwines with reality and touches on social issues. An homage to the great illustrators through images, which are almost abstract.

Non Fiction experimental cinema - Special Mention
TERRITORIO MENTALE 1
Director: Alessandro Olla
Italy

Motivation
A sequence of images edited like poetry. Frames flow in a measured way, setting emotions free. Technique runs high and vision and text go hand in hand in a seamless way.

Best Italian Video
THE END OF FLOWERS
Director: Arianna De Giorgi
Italy

Motivation
The director gives life to a complete, measured, involving and, at the same time, surrealistic story. The performance of the young leading actress is worth of mention: a measured mixture of childish expressions and teenage mischief. A clear-cut snapshot of everyday life depicting the small-big personal tragedies of the protagonists. Editing, photography and setting all build up a sound track of images, which conjures up both American literature and music.

Best Documentary
PO CUD
Director: Jarek Szatandera
Poland

Motivation
The movie deals with the individual dynamics and choral dimension of a religious community in a way, which is far from ordinary. A documentary idea of a trip of hope developed with refined irony and formal consistency.

Documentary Section - Special Mention
CLUSTER – PRESE DI UNA CITTA’
Director: AA.VV.
Italy

Motivation
The film possesses original outlook and carefully listens to places and people. The authors, who attend a documentary film course, have put together the lost fragments of a complex urban reality such as Florence’s.

Best International Video
HAMMER AND FLAME
Director: Vaughan Pilikian

Motivation
Keeping the right distance, the film leads us to discover a place, which may belong to Dante’s Inferno: Alang - where a community of nameless men recovers the things, that the rich world no longer needs. The absence of music or dialogue allows the audience to freely interpret an Inferno, which, after all, is not that far away.

VCO Province Special Award for Social Contents
PROTEST!
Director: Darion Marshall
Great Britain

Motivation
For the clear and concise way in which the film deals with the issues of tolerance and solidarity among different people and peoples, setting the story within the frame of a symbolic place of exchange, that is to say, London tube, so dramatically renowned of late.

Special mention for the sound
ROSELLE
Eugene Chang
USA

Motivation
Perfect syntony between the “American dream” and music, which accompanies it along a time path winding from Gershwin’s and Jerome Kern’s ‘30s to the present days. The sound track further creates a perfect symbiosis with a Chicago whose soul has always been marked by a weighty musical background.
