Here African Giant Rats - the size of a cat - are taught to sniff out explosives hidden in the ground. After a year’s training she is sent on her first mission to neighbouring Mozambique, whose 30 years of war have left millions of mines hidden in the earth. A whole unit of rats walks delicately back and forth over the minefields, attached to lines. When they’ve finished, the fields are safe again. Hundreds of lives have been saved, thousands of crippling injuries avoided. Miss Marple is a true hero rat!. Giant rats are clever and they learn fast. Their sense of smell is better than a dog’s, they have more stamina, and they’re a lot cheaper to train. Apopo’s founder Bert Weetjens makes use of their natural instincts. They are curious and always looking for food. They store whatever they find in their cheeks and bring it home. And because they constantly update the map in their brains, they never get lost. Perfect raw skills that can be honed to work with new scents. First, trainer Niko Saroni must get the new-born Miss Marple accustomed to him. then he gradually acquaints her with the smell of explosives - in the labs, and then with defused mines in the fields. Even a talented rat needs a year to master the skills. Finally, it’s off to the former war zones. Mines kill fifty people around the world every day. And there are a hundred million of them still to be found. 70 trainers and carers are employed at Apopo’s labs in Morogoro, Tanzania. Their first task is to overcome local prejudice. In East Africa rats are seen as crop-seating pests. But the rats will do anything for bananas, avocados or nuts - even find mines! Bert Weetjens is a cofirmed rat fan. He’s even thought up other challenges for them: identiyfing tuberculosis bacteria in human saliva far faster than any human technician could. And if you fit a mini-camera on their back, they can even search for people trapped in collapsed buildings. This film follows Miss Marple and Niko through the training course in the lab and the early tests. We are with Miss Marple each time she gets the hang of another part of her perilous work. It’s a long and hard training, full of surprises, until the day comes when she can finally fulfil her mission.

A settlement in Burgenland owes its economic development to the utilisation of renewable energy resources. Nemetujvar (today Gussing) near the Austro-Hungarian border was regarded as the poorest settlement of Austria twenty years ago. In 1990, however, the local government decided to produce the energy needs of the town out of locally found sources. Today the town produces electrical energy, heat, gas and diesel out of solar energy, burnt wood, fermented maize silo and meadow grass.

Geographical islands have represented evolutive
laboratories for species and a challenge for animals and plants that have had to adapt to the local conditions of these territories. Thus, these isolated places have compelled living beings to find ecological solutions that are different from those normally used on the five continents. Likewise, in the interior of the continents, there are specific places with exclusive environmental conditions that are different from the areas that surround them. These inland ecological islands, many of which have been created by man in his devastating attempt to expand, have similar rules to those of geographical
islands. Isolated is the story about the different species that inhabit these islands –the geographical islands and the continental islands – and how they have to confront the local rules of survival, which, surprisingly, have a lot in common. A marine iguana on the Galapagos Islands, a group of lemurs in Madagascar, a tiger in Sariska National Park in India, a deer in the south of Jersey Island (U.K), two grizzly bears on Kodiak Island (Alaska), an orangutan in Borneo, and a crocodile in Papua New Guinea are some of the protagonists of this story about adapting to local paradises. Through them, we will learn about the problem of living in isolation, the challenges of surviving in the limited space of an island, the competition to find a niche to exploit, and the alliances established among the different animals so that they can reach their most important goal: the survival of the species. In this first chapter of the series "Isolated" we will present the concept of isolation and will discuss its different origins. This first episode will be an introduction to the rest of the series. It will give a general vision of the subjects that will later be developed in detail in the following episodes. Here we will discuss adaptation, geological cataclysms, massive extinctions, and ecological frailties.

Cenotes – the Holy Wells of the Maya, a film by Christian Redinger Covered by the dense jungle of the Yucatan peninsula in South Eastern Mexico lie the ruins that witnessed a grand civilization, long perished. In a region where there is hardly a drop of rainfall for two thirds of the year and any precipitation is quickly absorbed by the limestone, the Maya in over 3000 years established a civilization that would experience its mysterious decline even before the Spanish conquerors reached Yucatan. „D`zonot“ – holy wells – was what the Maya called the countless, small water holes in the seasonally dry forest of Yucatan, which guaranteed their survival in times of drought. The Cenotes, as these wells are called today, played a central role in their mythology. Under their surface lay the entrance to the underworld, the lightless primeval sea of the hereafter, home of the gods, ancestors and beasts. In honour of the rain god Chak the Maya sacrificed material offerings as well as humans in the Cenotes. But how could these small ponds sustain the fresh water supply of a whole people and provide enough water for intensive farming for what the Maya had been clearing most of the jungle Yucatans? Just a few years ago, cave divers succeeded to solve this mystery. Flooded passageways, fissures and caves connect the individual Cenotes of Yucatan over great distances. In them, the water from seasonal rainfalls flows in broad underground streams from inland to the ocean. More than 500 kilometres of Yucatans underground rivers have been cartographically documented so far. But this seems to be just a small part of the most extensive, flooded cave system on our planet. In the Mayan mythology the World-Tree, which carries the sky, is the one holding the universe together and making life possible for man and beast. It stretches its roots down into the underworld of the Cenotes, where it drinks water from the primeval sea. The beliefs of the Maya were based on facts. In a mystical way they understood the dependence of Yucatan’s entire vegetation on the water of the Cenotes. After the year 800 Ad, in what is today Guatemala, the downfall of the Maya civilization began. In the 15th century it caught up with the city states of Yucatan. The excessive cultivation of corn exhausted the soil. Erosion, as well as periods of drought was in all likelihood the reason for crop failure. Famine, tuberculosis and wars depopulated whole regions and nobles and priests failed as the keepers of the divine order. Revolts sealed the fate of a highly advanced civilization. The universe had gone out of balance.

Coal, Earth, Home  is about what "home" means to a group of villagers who may lose their 750 year old hometown, Heuersdorf in the former East Germany. The village is located on the edge of an open pit brown coal mine in the heart of the Central German mining region. Since the fall of the Wall, the brown coal mining industry has shrunk considerably, yet with new U.S. American investors, the mining company has become a saavy multinational corporation trying to uphold what little mining remains. The mining company proclaims the need for the expansion of its mine to fuel a new brown coal power plant, but the village is in the way and has to be demolished. Most villlagers do not want to leave. They are disillusioned with the new capitalist system where corporations work with the government to try to control their lives. The environmental and human costs of energy production become very evident through this dilemna. Interviews with townspeople, speeches by top politicians and images of the quaint town contrasted by colossal mining machinery portray a conflict of economics, resources, politics and the individual person common to the world over in the face of "progress".

Most school textbooks continue to recite the conventional wisdom that Europe does not have any deserts. They are out of date. Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece are four EU countries that are already so badly affected that they have joined the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD). A fifth of Spanish land is so degraded that it is turning into desert, and in Italy tracts of land in the south are now abandoned and have also been declared desert. But the problem is not confined to these four countries. Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova, Romania and Russia have all reported signs of desertification – and in the Ukraine 41% of agricultural land is at risk of erosion. In 2000, the United Nations published a report in which it stated ‘the first stages of serious soil degradation were being noted in parts of Europe and 150 million hectares are at a high risk of erosion. Deterioration is at a critical point in Mediterranean countries’.

Barely known and never seen, Elephant shrews baffle even the zoologists. With their stilt-like legs and long mobile trunk, joined to the body of a large shrew with a golden bottom, they certainly deserve their name - though they are related to neither elephant not shrew! This shy, endangered creature has become the mascot of Kenya’s beautiful Arabuko National Park. The income they attract via tourism pays for the education of local children. The elephant shrew has truly become the Spirit of the Forest.These are very cautious animals. Hunted by eagles and snakes, they retreat under piles of leaves on the forest floor. During the day they will seek out beetles and worms with their twitching trunk. Biologists once ranked them with mice and hedgehogs, but now they have a class of their own: the Sengis. Their only habitat is the Arabuko forest on Kenya’s East Coast. Kenya’s last coastal forest is a unique - and globally significant - centre of biodiversity. And it even contains ancient ruined cities straight out of The Jungle Book. Its best-known citizen is this creature with its whimsical looks and amusing behaviour; local and international environmentalists have taken the elephant shrew as a symbol for a new approach to protecting our world. Thus the inhabitants are learning to profit from the forest without damaging it. They run butterfly farms, and plant medicinal herb gardens. Projects like these are bringing work and wages to a growing population. As more people begin to understand what the forest can do for them, so there is less poaching in the elephant shrew’s domain. People have stopped cutting down trees to make their fires and build their houses, planting new trees instead. They have built an electric fence to keep the elephants out of their villages; they have come to love the jumbos instead of shooting at them, and they have a new tourist attraction. It’s all about defeating ignorance and adapting old traditions - a full-time job for the forest rangers and researchers. This film follows forest ranger and nature guide Willy Kembo as he educates two 12-year-old cousins, Karim and Karembo, in the ways of the forest, and keeps an eye out for the last of the illegal woodcutters!

The salt-cellars of Bulgaria are situated in the Bourgas Bay of The Black Sea. Since ancient times, salt is mined in the Pomorie Lake and the Atanassovsko Lake in a traditional way through evaporation of sea water. These lakes are also reserves, where over 300 species of rare birds threatened with extinction live. A migration way of a special species of birds, Via Pontica, passes above the bay. For ages, Homolje Mountains have been known for the remarkable natural beauty that has also influenced the beliefs and customs of local people. Hidden in mountains around Kucevo there are dozens of astonishing caves that nature has been carving for millions of years. From ancient times people believed that nymphs, dragons and monsters lived in those dark places. Actually, hidden in them you can find true underground treasures - marvelous ornaments made of shiny crystal calcite in all sorts of strange shapes. For centuries the "gold diggers" have been ravaging those caves. Ceremosnja is a deep cave located some 15 km away from Kucevo and is considered one of the most beautiful in Serbia. Cave consists of one large cavern called Arena which is 24 meters high with exceptional acoustic features. Ravnistarka is a river cave, 500 meters long. Until year 1980 it was hidden from the eyes of the public and the experts. This cave was discovered by courageous locals who decided to work on it although they didn’t have any expert or financial support. The team of Eco Caravan documented numerous stories about these underground rock caverns told by Prof Dr Radenko Lazarevic, our famous geomorphologist who also takes care of them. Both of these caves are under the protection of the Nature Protection Institute of Serbia.

Water is life, for without water nothing on life can exist. But water can also mean death and destruction. When rivers flood their banks, then the element reveals its devastating power. In 1997 the Oder flooded its banks, in 2002 the Elbe, and in 2005 there were floods throughout the land at the foothills of the Alps. Evacuations of entire districts, damages in the billions, people injured and dead were the consequences. Floods are more feared than almost any catastrophe. Yet life in nature waits longingly each year for this event. In spring, when the snow melts and the first rainfalls cause the water level to rise, then life returns to the river after the winter. Alluvial forests are among the eco-systems with the greatest abundance of species in Central Europe. The kingfisher builds its nest burrow in steep banks, the beaver causes small floods with its dams, frogs and newts settle in damp hollows and material that is washed away from one place stays put somewhere else. River banks and their forests are Europe’s last jungles – and of great significance not only for flora and fauna. Alluvial forests are actually a perfect protection against the devastating floods that people fear so much. But only a small fraction of the rivers in Europe still has natural flood-plain woods. Straightened, dammed and dyked – man has tried to tame the rivers and use them for his own purposes. But water cannot be locked in.The documentary shows how the rivers are now reclaiming their rightful place in the landscape, how skilfully the animals cope with the floods and how humans could learn from the cleverness of nature.

A 400 year old oak tree is to be cut down to make way for a new highway. The roadway is to lead to the next projected development, with 20,000 housing units, in the ever growing urban sprawl of Los Angeles County. "Oak 419" is a documentary about the protest movement to try to save this tree, led by John Quigley who spent 71 days living on its limbs. The movement became much bigger than just this tree, receiving great media attention, which became the main tool of the protest. The significance of someone having the courage to stand up for what he believes in was reflected in the enthusiastic crowd of people who were drawn to the tree: television reporters and camerapeople, photographers, radio announcers, musicians, people in frog suits, Latino immigrants, Filippino immigrants, cheerleaders, Native Americans and even Santa Claus – symbolic of the cultural diversity of Los Angeles and California. The film is about an attempt to reclaim democracy in today’s divided, neoconservative America. The occupied tree became the "proverbial line in the sand" between nature, and the voracious development that is happening all over the world in the age of global warming. Ever since birds first appeared on earth, their remarkable
diversification allowed them to conquer all the different habitats on the
planet's surface. Their wings gave them the ability to fly and to reach places no other kind of animal could reach. Only the sea deterred them. Until the arrival of penguins. Determined to conquer the oceans, penguins took millions of years to realize their objective. They managed to adapt in ways that had never been seen before amongst birds. They acquired the ability to live in water for months at a time, to dive to depths of as much as 300 meters, and to withstand the rigors of the coldest regions in the southern hemisphere. But on their long journey to do so, they paid a very high price. Diversification produced different species, all capable of tolerating seemingly impossible temperatures; penguins became masters of environmental adaptation, sufferers-in-silence and noisy members of large colonies. No other family of birds has as extraordinary a tale as do penguins… the birds who wanted to be fish.

The Gorubso factory for ore enrichment is settled in the center of the town of Kurdjali. The production site is situated 300 meters away form the living buildings, as well as the two storages for dangerous substances. Natrium cyanide is stored in one of them. When a reaction between natrium cyanide and acids is held, it turns into the poisonous gas hydrocyanogen. The factory is preparing to start producing golden bricks in the center of the city, which is dangerous and is against the European Union decrees. Wastewater and liquid effluents tanks of “Gorubso” for the waste products from the process of ore enrichment do not fulfill the ecological requirements. Two villages are situated several meters away from the wastewater and liquid effluents tanks and the people breathe the dangerous dust. The number of the diseases increases.

The big energy company "Enel" buys "Maritsa Iztok 3" Heat Power Station and the agreement includes investments of 150 million euro for decontamination of the harmful emissions in the atmosphere as well as for other measures for environmental pollution prevention. "Enel" doesn’t make these investments and on a regular basis pays the fines. This infringes not only on the EU’s rights, but it also violates the ordinary human life because the town of Galabovo, which is nearby, is regularly polluted with gas.

Can you believe that there once was a rural village which needed green coverage? Today Professor Han and Siao-bing will take you to Ottenhausen, a picturesque village in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with a population of only 578. Thirty years ago, in order to modernize the village, the villagers widened the roads, and covered the village square with cement for parking. But then they realized that the trees, frogs and bats disappeared, and their success brought frequent flooding. The worsening conditions led the villagers to reconsider, and they launched a full-scale village renewal movement. The renewed Ottenhausen was awarded a gold medal as a model village, and it serves as an example for future eco-rural villages.

Once removed from his primordial surroundings, a man doesn’t stop longing for them… In order to preserve these relations, our hero persistently repeats performing a ritual of his own, full of strong primeval symbolism. He leaves a place of urban living, and takes a steep narrow path through the rocks, to reach the dead village high up in the mountains, abandoned long time ago. There, amidst scattered remnants of former houses, on the hearth of his ancestors, he always makes a fire. The roof emanates thin, blue patches of smoke, and the smoke means: hearth, fire, family, life... Alone as the last man on the Earth, surrounded only by the elements (air, water, earth, fire), the hero sends the message that life still exists there…

Over a thousand kinds of fish and numerous seasnakes populate Orchid Island’s coral reefs, while Lanyu Scops Owls, Whistling Green Pigeons and Birdwing butterflies thrive in forests that teem with life. The Tao people came here from the Philippines nearly a thousand years ago and their guardianship of both forest and ocean has preserved the island’s wild nature. They still harvest the sea from hand-made boats, and many spiritual beliefs and links with nature survive, despite the modernizing influence of nearby Taiwan. Syaman Rapongan, a highly-respected Tao writer, reveals the traditions of his tribe and how he follows the old taboos, respecting nature and the spirits that watch over it. He acts as a passionate and thoughtful guide to the colorful ceremonies and ancient beliefs of the Tao. His insights into this unique culture have much to tell a modern world whose values have lost touch with nature.

It was during Japan’s period of high economic growth that the Oriental White Stork disappeared from the Japanese islands. Forests were torn down, and chemical pesticides were used extensively, causing the storks to lose their habitat and their source of food. And now, in the exact same place from where the storks disappeared, in the land of Toyooka in Hyogo Prefecture, a second attempt to co-exist with the storks has begun. Storks bred in captivity are now being released into the wild with the cooperation of the farmers and local citizens. Through the changing of the seasons and the cycles of nature, we will hear the thoughts and hopes of the people, and witness the difficulties these captivity-bred storks face in the ‘real wild’ world.

We do not deal with the rafting as a sport discipline of brave or adrenaline addicted people. In our documentary man and nature embrace, as do the soil, the skies and the waters; flowers and noise; and small particles with the parent cosmos reflected in the Lim River. The rafting on the Lim adventure is not the only theme of the documentary. It also deals with the tame and wild nature surrounding the Lim Valley; steep slopes and not so steep hills rising above these fascinating waters; and man living together in peace or clashing with the elements from time immemorial - with the nature parent.

In your head, under your feet and everywhere around. A non-sharable experience. Twenty four million square kilometres of ice and them. Alone, somewhere in the middle of the world’s coldest continent. They decided to walk on foot from the edge of the Antarctic continent as far as its highest point.

Most people shun cleaning the toilet. There is, however, a group of volunteers who are willing to ascend 3000 meters above sea level to clean a toilet atop Jade Mountain. This is no ordinary toilet. This toilet is an experimental facility that allows volunteers to convert human waste into fertilizer. If successful, the experiment will substantially benefit the construction of toilets in remote areas, environmental protection efforts, and the water sources. Nevertheless, cleaning this toilet requires a three-day trip. Chen Ta-sen, one of the volunteers, has been cleaning the toilet two to three times a month over the past year. What is his motivation? Perhaps, it is the love for the land and a feeling of gratefulness toward the forest and mountain.

This is a film on white birds, which have already been for centuries the symbol of Vojvodina, North Serbia. The film shooting required great love and patience, it took three years (2005 – 2007), mostly in the villages and marshes along the Rivers Tamis and Danube. This film is particularly valuable because it records subtle feelings and specific Stork behaviour during the mating season, egg hatching, feeding, delivering of babies and dying. With this film we have also supported the young ornithologists’ Project: "Safe Nest for White Storks", aimed to prevent Storks from becoming electrical shock victims. We are certain that this film shall touch the soul of the audience, since it basically deals with life, which is not easy at all, but "must go on".

In the documentary made by Tanja Kanceljak will find out why people from Zadar say that who ever visits Zadar and did not took a ride with barkajol did not actually visit Zadar. For 800 years barkajols are been a brand for Zadar but the main thing is a transport for Zadar’s working people. In small boats powered by rowing all weather conditions they transport people from one point to the other, shortining a long walk arround peninsula. Most working people use this way of transportation for the whole time of being employed. Barkajols are very proud of their work. This business is in families for many generations. For many passangers they are information desk but also a needed friend. It is easy in a summer time then in a winter when are hands in a freezing and sometimes they are there only one person.
